Chicks enjoying the sun!

Hatch day is one of the most exciting moments in the entire journey. After twenty one days of quiet development inside the incubator your chicks finally arrive wet tired and full of potential. These first hours are gentle and important. With the right care your new arrivals settle quickly and grow confidently in their new environment.

This guide walks you through everything you need to know from the moment a chick hatches until it is comfortably settled in the brooder.

Step #1: Move the chicks to the brooder

A chick is ready for the brooder once it looks soft and fluffy. The brooder is the safe warm space where the chicks will live for the first several weeks.

The brooder should have:

• A steady heat source such as an adjustable brooder plate or a warm lamp

• Soft clean bedding

• Fresh water in a shallow chick safe dish

• Starter feed made for young chicks

Place the chicks gently into the brooder and give them time to explore.

Step #2: Show the chicks where the water is

Chicks are curious but they still need a little guidance. After placing each chick in the brooder dip the tip of its beak gently into the water dish. This teaches the chick where to drink and encourages a strong start.

You may notice the chicks begin drinking and pecking right away. This is a great sign that they are alert and adjusting well.

Step #3: Keep the brooder warm and draft free

Baby chicks cannot regulate their own body temperature so consistent warmth is essential.

Here is a simple temperature guide:

• First week about thirty five degrees Celsius under the heat source

• Allow the chicks to choose warm and cool areas within the brooder

If the chicks huddle tightly they are cold. If they spread far from the heat source they are too warm. If they move around freely the temperature is just right.

Step #4: Provide clean water and starter feed

Chicks need constant access to fresh water and chick starter feed. These two things support healthy growth and strong immune systems.

Helpful tips

• Change water often so it stays clean

• Use a shallow dish or chick waterer to prevent drowning

• Choose a high quality starter crumble designed for young poultry

Step #5: Keep the environment calm and gentle

Young chicks thrive in peaceful surroundings. Loud noises sudden movements or too many visitors can cause stress. Encourage children to interact quietly and slowly so the chicks feel safe.
